What Are Children’s Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings are sometimes called “white” fillings. Unlike fillings from years past that were crafted from unsightly metals, these fillings are made from composite resin. This flexible, plastic-based material is biocompatible and adheres to enamel much better than silver fillings. Not only does this minimize tooth sensitivity, but it dramatically lowers the risk of future complications. Plus, the composite resin can be shaded to match the color of the surrounding enamel to make it blend in seamlessly!
The Process of Getting a Children’s Tooth-Colored Filling
Repairing your child’s smile with a tooth-colored filling will likely only take one quick and easy appointment. Your little one’s comfort and wellbeing are our top priorities, so first and foremost we’ll numb the area surrounding the tooth to ensure they don’t feel any discomfort during treatment. Then, the decayed enamel is carefully removed and the remaining empty space is sanitized to ensure no cavity-causing bacteria remains.
We’ll select a shade of composite resin that closely matches the color of the surrounding enamel, then mold the flexible material into the space. We’ll use a special blue curing light to harden the resin in place and seal it. Lastly, the tooth is polished up to ensure it looks and feels as natural as possible!
The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
- Mercury-Free: While the ADA has deemed that there’s not enough mercury in silver fillings to pose a threat to one’s health, it can still put many patients and parents on edge. Tooth-colored fillings are 100% metal-free and mercury-free, which dramatically lowers any risk of adverse effects.
- Quick & Comfortable Treatment: Tooth-colored fillings are a non-invasive treatment. This means that your little one’s appointment should be relatively fast and discomfort-free!
- Nearly Invisible Appearance: Once your child’s tooth has been treated with a tooth-colored filling, no one will be able to tell! Not only is the composite resin the same color as a natural tooth, but this material is well-known for its ability to mimic the texture and appearance of enamel.
- Easily Prevent Serious Complications: When left untreated, cavities can infect the pulp of a tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. Not only do these options cause significant discomfort for your child, but they will require extensive treatments like pulp therapy or an extraction to treat. Spotting and stopping cavities early with a tooth-colored filling is a quick, easy, and affordable way to care for your little one’s smile!
